AGP video cards were all the rage for many years. While they are no longer as popular among high end computing enthusiasts, they are still popular among resellers and computer swap meets. These cards were some of the first dedicated cards on the PC market, requiring a special slot on the motherboard to work. They paved the way for advanced graphics processing now available on home computers.
How to Install an AGP Video Card
- Make sure your computer has an AGP slot. These slots are much more than a standard PCI slot and will typically have an oddly shaped tab at the end.
- Release the panel cover. There should be a screw that secures into a loosely “L” shaped aluminum bar that covers the AGP slot.
- Push the AGP card down into its slot. Some AGP cards are extremely difficult to insert. You really have to push them to get them seated properly.
- Remove the back flap if necessary for your card. Some cards are longer than others, there’s an oddly shaped tab on the back of the AGP slot. Remove this tab if necessary, but hold it in case you need to put it back on later. If you don’t need to remove the tab then no, it’s part of what keeps the smaller cards sitting correctly
- Screw the metal plate back onto the computer in the same location. that you took the cap off.
